‘River God Tyne’ by Michael Rickwood

The 'River God Tyne' is a bronze statue mounted on the outer wall of Newcastle Civic Centre. The statue by David Wynne was commissioned for the Civic Centre's opening in 1968. It depicts one of eight rivers represented as sculptures of 1786 on the front of Somerset House in London. The statue has a fountain within his outstretched hand. The sculpture is Grade 2 Listed. This iconic photograph and darkened the backdrop to make the figure pop.
